Hi, I’m Dr Carla Meijen

As a sport psychologist I work with people to help them understand how they can use sport psychology to help them on their sport and exercise journey.

Helping you to clarify your goals, develop a meaningful route to achieve these goals, and change how you feel about pressure are all important parts of my work. I am interested in what drives you and believe that this is an important ingredient to help you put good intentions into action.

I am very passionate about ‘translating’ sport psychology - all of us can benefit from it!

I have worked with athletes from a range of sports, including endurance sport, racquet sports, and ball sports, as well as a range of levels (recreational, regional, national, Olympic level) and ages. My work includes consultancy on an individual basis as well as tailor-made workshops and work at events such as marathons. I strongly believe that if you enjoy your sport this will help you to perform well at every level (and this goes beyond sport).

MY story

My sport psychology journey started when I was around 17 years old. I grew up in the Netherlands and started to think about what to do after school. I was fascinated by people and sport, playing basketball at the time. Why not combine the two? This was the start of my sport psychology journey. At the time there was no recognised sport psychology pathway in the Netherlands and I mapped out my own journey. During and after my psychology degree at the University of Amsterdam (MSc Social Psychology) I ventured out to Sweden (Lund University, sport psychology placement), Scotland (University of Edinburgh, MSc Performance Psychology), and England (Staffordshire University, PhD in Sport Psychology, 2011). After many years in the UK, I recently moved back to the Netherlands.

I am a chartered sport and exercise psychologist with the British Psychological Society and I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council since 2009.
